Ceramics in the kitchen: Safe use of ceramic tableware in the dishwasher, oven, and microwave

Ceramic tableware is popular in the kitchen for its durability and versatility. However, improper use in the dishwasher or microwave can damage the decor or the item itself. Unfortunately, not all tableware can be safely washed in the dishwasher or placed in the microwave.

Do you often wonder if your porcelain and ceramic items are suitable for the dishwasher and microwave? This article aims to answer that question and provide practical tips on how to care for ceramic tableware to keep it looking beautiful for a long time.

Porcelain and ceramic items can last for many years if handled correctly. By following the recommendations below for use in the dishwasher and microwave, you can ensure that your tableware maintains its aesthetics and quality. Remember, gentleness and proper care are key to the longevity of your favorite ceramic pieces.

For some of our products, washing in the dishwasher is even very useful. For example, cups made from unglazed stoneware, which is not as vitrified as porcelain, may develop light stains from lipstick or coffee over time. Washing them in the dishwasher will thoroughly remove all dirt.

Washing ceramic tableware in the dishwasher

The dishwasher is a great household helper, saving time and energy, which is why most of us own one. However, sometimes we place items in it without thinking and regret it bitterly after taking them out.

The items we put in the dishwasher must withstand the high water temperature during washing and the hot air during drying. Some washing cycles can last up to 4 hours, so the ceramic or porcelain item needs to be sturdy, well-fired, and not overly absorbent.

Check if the tableware is dishwasher safe
  • Not all ceramic tableware is suitable for the dishwasher. Items decorated with precious metals, such as platinum, gold, and lusters, definitely do not belong in the dishwasher. The salt and cleaning chemicals are so aggressive that after several washes, the gold (or other precious metals) will lose its former appearance (dull) and gradually disappear. Over time, the decor will wash off completely, and there will be no trace of the decoration left.

  • Likewise, cracked, glued, or otherwise damaged pieces of tableware, as well as antique ceramics and porcelain, do not belong in the dishwasher. These pieces have their historical value, and washing them in the dishwasher would cause you to lose it.

Arrangement in the dishwasher
  • Try not to overfill the dishwasher. An overloaded dishwasher can cause the tableware to collide during washing, which can lead to cracks and chipped glaze. Place ceramic plates, cups, and bowls so that they do not touch, ideally with small gaps between individual pieces. Also, keep in mind that metal cutlery and other utensils can scratch the ceramics, so place them separately in the dishwasher.

Use the Right Detergent
  • Use mild detergents specifically designed for dishwashers. Some very aggressive cleaning agents can damage the glaze and decor.

  • If you use a dishwasher with regenerating salt, make sure the salt does not damage the glaze. Excessive amounts of salt can be abrasive.

Choose the right washing program
  • Use programs with lower temperatures (around 50–60°C). Higher temperatures can cause cracking or fading of the decor.

  • Shorter washing cycles can be gentler on the tableware but ensure they remove all food residues.

Remove ceramic tableware from the dishwasher promptly
  • After the washing cycle is over, open the dishwasher to let out steam and allow the tableware to dry properly.

Using ceramic tableware in the microwave

The microwave allows us to quickly heat food, making it an essential part of modern kitchens. However, not all tableware is suitable for the microwave. Below you will find practical tips on how to safely use tableware in the microwave and which types of tableware can be used without worry.

Check if the tableware is microwave safe

  • Just like with the dishwasher, not all ceramic tableware is suitable for the microwave. Look for information on the product stating "microwave safe" or a symbol with a square containing glasses and plates.

Use the right tableware

  • Do not place ceramic tableware with metal decorations or gilding in the microwave. Metal can cause sparking.

Even heating
  • It is important to remember to stir the food occasionally during heating. In extreme cases, uneven heating could cause thermal shock and cracking of the ceramic tableware. Microwave covers also help distribute heat evenly and protect the tableware from direct thermal shock.

Avoid sudden temperature changes
  • Try not to place hot tableware from the microwave directly onto cold surfaces or into a cold environment (like the fridge or freezer). Extreme sudden temperature changes are harmful to ceramic tableware and could cause cracks over time.

Porcelain and ceramic tableware suitable for the oven

Although the oven is a key kitchen appliance that allows for baking, grilling, and roasting various dishes, using ceramic tableware is not fundamentally different from the microwave. Our products are fired at high temperatures during production, so they can easily handle heating in the microwave or baking in the oven.

Gradual heating
  • When using ceramic tableware in the oven, avoid thermal shocks. Do not place the tableware directly from the fridge into a hot oven to prevent cracking or damage. Ideally, allow the tableware to warm to room temperature first.

Proper placement in the oven
  • For even baking, place the tableware in the center of the oven and ensure proper air circulation by leaving enough space between other dishes. A great advantage of ceramic tableware is that it conducts heat evenly, making it ideal for slow baking and roasting.

3 Tips for safe use and long life of ceramic tableware

  1. Hand washing If you have time, wash ceramic tableware by hand using a gentle sponge and detergent. This is the most gentle cleaning method, and your favorite piece will likely continue to bring you joy until it breaks. Wash it in the dishwasher occasionally to restore its whiteness.

  2. Regular inspections Regularly check your tableware for small cracks. Damaged tableware is more susceptible to further damage, and the problem usually grows over time.

  3. Use mats When placing hot ceramic tableware on a table or work surface, use mats to avoid large thermal shocks.
